Each fall 25,000 raptors migrate south over Rockfish Gap, and volunteers at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch count them all as part of a citizen-scientist effort to monitor raptor populations in North America! Come join us at our annual OPEN HOUSE event on Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., as we witness this great migration and enjoy a fun day of family events. Here you’ll be able to try out binoculars, learn how to identify raptors, meet our counters and learn about how we conduct a hawk watch and why.
Free refreshments will be provided, various educational and conservation materials as well as mounted raptor specimens will be on display, and the Wildlife Center of Virginia will be presenting their live raptor program starting at noon. Be sure to bring your binoculars, a lawn chair (or blanket) and sunscreen! The Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is located on the grounds of the Inn at Afton, right off I-64 exit 99, just 5 miles east of Waynesboro, VA. Be sure to bring your binoculars, a lawn chair and sunscreen!
