WCVE PBS and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture invite you to an evening with Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times best-selling author of the award-winning book Hidden Figures.

This event is in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and the Museum’s exhibition “Determined: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality.”

Shetterly will discuss the historical nexus of race, gender, and technology in America’s aerospace industry and will be joined by Dinwiddie County native and mathematician, Dr. Gladys West. West is featured in the museum’s exhibition and is credited with a 42-year career of modelling the shape of the Earth that became the basis for Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Together, Shetterly and West will discuss the profound, and often unacknowledged, ways that women of color have contributed to American innovation.

Light reception and book signing following the lecture. You may reserve your signed copy of Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly here.

VMHC will also present Margot Lee Shetterly with the Richard Slatten Award for Excellence in Virginia Biography.

Please note that this event will not be recorded, and ticketing end July 26th, so be sure to get your tickets to attend!
